Embrace Your Power and Live in Love

Author, Speaker, and Empowerment Advisor Susan Goudy Offers Accessible Solutions for Moving Beyond Trauma

Six in ten adults report surviving abuse, trauma, or other difficult family experiences during childhood. In the United States, 26% of children witness or experience trauma before the age of four.

Professional counselor, author, motivational speaker, and empowerment advisor Susan Goudy was sexually assaulted by a teenage neighbor just months before her third birthday. After working to create her own clear path to healing and recovery, she has now dedicated her life to supporting others who wish to move past trauma, embrace a life of joy and purpose, and reclaim personal power.

“Everybody has things happen in life,” says Susan, “but to recover, you’ve got to be solution-focused. The world has taught us that we should be uncomfortable, that we should struggle and suffer to be a better person, but that’s just not true. We can be comfortable, happy, and well. We can feel good and take charge of our own lives. Sometimes it’s hard to do, but you can absolutely do it.”

Your Power Is Right There: All You Have to Do Is Take It.

In her groundbreaking book “The Journey from Fear to Love Is Shorter Than You Think,” Susan offers clear solutions for anyone who is ready to move out of the shadow of old traumas and create their best life. A large part of this process, she says, is realizing and reclaiming your personal power.

“Your power is right there,” says Susan. “Just take it. Grab onto it. It’s inside of you; it’s not separate from you. We’re all human and any of us can have a downer day, but practice reminding yourself that this isn’t the end of the world. Call on helpful techniques to pull yourself out and lift yourself up.”

Susan teaches a variety of methods for achieving this, including these 11 helpful tips:

* Acknowledge What Happened – Sit with it for a bit. Feel how you feel about it; let yourself cry, scream, or whatever it is you need to do.
* Let It All Out – Tell someone. Find someone you trust and tell them what happened to you (i.e., a friend, a family member, or a counselor).
* Take a Closer Look – Look at the situation and see how it has affected your life, both in bad and good ways. Has it made you stronger? Has it held you back?
* Throw Out Your Baggage – Seek help. Find a counselor or healing professional who can assist you in throwing out the baggage once and for all.
* Change Your Perception – You can choose how this situation affects you going forward. Perhaps you will create a new life path because of this — one that is more fulfilling.
* Step Into Your Power – Take your control back by saying “no” to things that aren’t in alignment with your wants.
* Embrace Your Value – Match your thoughts and feelings to your expectations and life goals. You will realize you are worthy and deserving of the best in your life.
* Accept Change – Stay in the moment and move forward; don’t look back.
* Love Yourself – Take care of yourself first. For example: exercise, meditate, journal, or do another self-care ritual before going to work, picking up the kids, cooking a meal for the family, etc.
* Serve Others – Helping others can be very positive as it increases your feelings of self-worth. Volunteer at a local animal shelter or help clean up your local park.
* WTF – Change the way you think about what you experience in life by redefining WTF as “What the For.” It’s a very effective and fun way to remember that everything in life happens FOR you, not TO you.

“‘The Journey from Fear to Love Is Shorter Than You Think’ is a poignant memoir revealing how our earliest experiences program the character of our health, relationships, and ability to achieve our desires. Susan Goudy’s experiential journey offers a powerful and wise prescription for healing our hearts and minds so that we may more effectively redefine the path of our life’s journey. Informative and engaging, ‘Fear to Love’ is a practical guide for experiencing a life overflowing with well-being and happiness.”

#MeToo, #TimesUp and Beyond
The #MeToo movement has empowered women everywhere to come forward and name their abusers, and the ongoing wave of support for #TimesUp calls for an end to workplace sexual harassment once and for all.

Susan Goudy is also encouraging a new conversation: Survivors of past abuse or assault experience a magnified impact when additional harassment, abuse, or assault is perpetrated.

“I was sexually abused as a young child and then grew up not really understanding what was going on within me,” Susan shares. “I had different fears than other girls my age, and blood-curdling nightmares. As a teenager and a young woman in Chicago, I was being sexually harassed on a regular basis because I travelled to and from high school and work through the city. My friends were thinking, ‘What’s your problem? They’re just flirting with us. The construction workers are just telling you you’re pretty.’ I would be terrified and want to run in the other direction; I was panicking and couldn’t breathe. With #MeToo and #TimesUp, it’s important to realize that there are so many women who already have a history of assault or abuse; when you add sexual harassment to it, it’s a whole new ballgame as far as how it affects them.”

“It needs to stop. We need to take our power back and be able to say, ‘No, it’s not okay to touch me like that or talk to me like that or even look at me like that.’ It’s time to realize just how powerful and wonderful we are, have been, and always will be.”

Anyone looking for solutions, answers, and a way to move forward and heal from trauma will benefit from Susan’s compassionate and forward-thinking approach.

“It’s very freeing to let go of all that stuff,” she says, “but it can also be scary to let go of old stories that have turned into excuses and become 100% accountable for your life here and now. That’s why it’s great to have support as you go through this. When you take your power back, you realize you can change your whole life. Your life can be the way you want it. You can do this.”
